“Request for Additional Evidence Was Sent”: what it means
Updated October 27, 2026 · Checked against USCIS sources
USCIS needs more documents or information before it can decide. A letter called a Request for Evidence (RFE) is on its way. It lists what to send and the deadline.
What it means
An RFE pauses the decision until USCIS receives your answer or the deadline passes. It is common and does not mean your case will be denied, but a late or incomplete answer can lead to a denial.
What usually comes next
What you can do
- Read the whole letter and answer every point it lists.
- Send your response before the deadline, with the RFE page on top, to the address on the letter.
- If the request is complex, talk to an immigration attorney or an accredited representative.

Questions
How long do I have to answer?
The deadline is printed on the letter. Do not count on extra time: a late answer may not be considered.
The letter has not arrived.
Letters are mailed and can take a couple of weeks. If you have a USCIS online account, the letter may appear there first.
